Doctoral Researcher in 6G Network Technology for Future Digital Twins and Metaverse
Open position
About
Tampere University hires a Doctoral Researcher to complete a four-year dissertation
project. The partner company for this position is Elisa Corporation.
Elisa's mission is a sustainable future through digitalisation. Elisa is a pioneer in
telecommunications and digital services, and in 5G. Elisa provides sustainable solutions for
over 2.8 million consumer, corporate and public administration customers in our core
markets of Finland and Estonia, as well as in over 100 countries internationally.
In Finland, Elisa is a market leader in telecommunications, and our international cooperation partners
include e.g. Vodafone and Tele2. Elisa is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki.
Elisa is rated as one of the most sustainable companies in the world.
The position is
placed in the Electrical Engineering Unit in the Faculty of Information Technology and
Communication Sciences.
Tampere University and University of Helsinki, together with the Technology Industries of
Finland Centennial Foundation and participating companies, run a joint DSII Scale-up Pilot project, which offers positions for doctoral researchers working in close cooperation with
industry.
The Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) explores research questions that are
directly relevant for industry and business.
Of the eight researchers who will be selected
for the program, half will be located at the University of Helsinki and half at Tampere
University, but both universities participate in the guidance of selected doctoral students.
This enables unique possibility for diverse and complementary research from theory to
applications in a highly motivated, cross disciplinary environment.
Job description
The purpose of the job is to create new knowledge for academia and industry in the field of
6G Network Technology for Future Digital Twins and Metaverse. The goals are:
1. To develop 6G radio access network (RAN) technology to support efficiently digital
twins, metaverse and situation awareness;
2. To assess the performance of the developed technology in different deployment
scenarios through simulations, and potentially also through real-world measurements;
3. To publish the new methods and other outcomes in the form of scientific referee
articles;
As a doctoral researcher you will be engaged in modeling tasks, new concept innovations,
development of new signal processing algorithms and development of new radio protocols
in the exciting field of 6G networks, digital twins, and metaverse. In the first phases of the
doctoral research, the emphasis will be on the uplink challenges and future networks
operating at the so-called golden band within 6-15 GHz.
The exact tasks and research problems can be defined and tailored based on the
qualifications and interests of the chosen applicant.
The results will be disseminated in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international
conferences, doctoral network events and events with industry. The tasks of doctoral
researchers also include teaching duties that amount to approximately 5% of their annual
working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.
At the universities, the work will be supervised by Prof. Mikko Valkama (Tampere University) and Prof. Sasu Tarkoma (University of Helsinki). You will also be supported by practitioners in the steering group, including company representatives and postdoctoral
university staff members.
Moreover, DSII Scale-up Pilot Project requires that the doctoral researcher is ready to participate in DSII meetings also on the campuses of the University of Helsinki and to work in the partner company's premises when necessary. Remote work opportunities are
agreed upon separately when needed. By participating in DSII events, excursions, meetings and training sessions with your fellow doctoral students, you will both get and provide peer support and make your own contribution to the development of DSII.
Requirements
You need to have an applicable master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering or a related discipline in science and engineering.
The position requires:
• Good understanding of mobile networks and the related radio and other protocols
• Good command of written and spoken English language
We appreciate that you would have experience in at least some of the following:
• Experience on scientific publishing with notable publishers, particularly IEEE
• Background expertise related to digital twins and/or metaverse
• Expertise on simulation and modelling tools related to mobile networks
• Good skills in applied mathematics, programming and machine learning tools
You also need to have an enquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while also being able to work in a team. A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is required.
Please note that before commencing in the position, the selected candidate must apply for a study right within the doctoral programme at Tampere University, unless they already have one. In this position, the applicable doctoral programme is the Doctoral Programme in Computing and Electrical Engineering.
