Doctoral Researcher in Railway Engineering
Open position
About
The Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) at Tampere University explores research questions that are directly relevant to industry and business. The partner company for this position is Vossloh Switch Systems, a global railway infrastructure company specializing in switches and crossings for rail networks.
Job description
The purpose of the job is to create new knowledge for academia and industry in railway engineering, with a focus on the life cycle management of railway turnouts. The research aims to develop mathematical models for turnout aging curves, identify the key parameters influencing them, and support the move from corrective to predictive maintenance.
As a Doctoral Researcher, you will work with literature, partner company expertise and data received from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to develop models for evaluating the remaining useful life of turnouts. The work will be supervised at Tampere University by Associate Professor Heikki Luomala. You will also take part in DSII events, excursions, meetings and training sessions with other doctoral researchers.
Requirements
You need to have an applicable higher university degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, railway engineering or another relevant field. The position requires a strong interest in railway engineering, mathematical modelling and life cycle management. You also need to be able to work independently, collaborate with academic and industry partners, have basic proficiency in Finnish, and communicate fluently in English.
