DSII Doctoral School researchers made a company visit as guests of Metso, a well-known Finnish company that manufactures sustainable technologies, end-to-end solutions, and services for the aggregates, mineral processing, and metal refining industries globally.
During the visit, we got to hear over a cup of coffee the history of Metso and what kind of company it is. With over 17 000 employees around the world, it’s safe to say that Metso is very diverse and has a strong presence around the globe. Sustainability is one of the key factors in their strategy.
After we had put on our safety equipment, we went to see the factory and the machines manufactured by Metso. As we entered the large industrial hall and walked up the stairs to the observation deck, we saw the Lokotrack production line and workers assembling them. Lokotrack mobile crushing and screening plants are used in aggregates production and recycling applications. They are originally developed and manufactured by Metso.
Friendly employees showed us around the factory and answered our many questions happily. On the factory tour, we saw Lokotrack units and a lot of different kinds of crushers which are used in aggregates production.
Metso also has research centers where they evaluate ore deposits and types, and do mineralogical characterization, feed material testing, sampling, materials selection, analytical chemistry, and flowsheet development. One of the research centers can be found in Tampere, Finland.
There you can also find one of our DSII doctoral researchers Mira Adolfsson, who is doing her dissertation in collaboration with Metso about Improved fatigue lifetime prediction of large and heavy machinery components. DSII industry visits are great opportunities to see what some of our DSII researchers are studying and learn new things from different fields of studies.
